I got this mail in the morning...

Hi,
I received a notice from Google that our website has been assessed a penalty after they "detected unnatural links" pointing to our website. Google will re-consider placing my site back in their index only if I remove these links.

Here are the links we saw: .....

So we are sending this email as a formal request to remove our links from your site!

As per Google's instruction: If you do not willingly help us - we will have to forward a documentation of this email and fill out a "disavow" form, including the details of your websites, which will hurt your Google rankings and might even get them removed.

Your prompt attention to this matter would be HIGHLY appreciated.

What think williamhill what we do? this is the worst company ever and is really eval they get a penalty or not, if this company steal money from his affiliate partners, why should we help for this!! unncredible

Received similar e-mail from 888 Ladies Bingo seo manager, to remove all affiliate links (including all no-follow) from my site, because Google demanded so.
Have to use re-direction method to drive visitors to them.
Jesus! Few years more and we become banned to place even one affiliate link to other site.
The world is crazy!

You should be aware that some of these requests are fraudulent. You should confirm with the named company if that email is correct and if they have such a person working for them. I suggest checking with your known affiliate manager before removing any links.

I was thinking the same, the wording is very poor; 'Google will re-consider placing my site back in their index'.

Looks fraudulent to me.

Surprisingly, it looks legit, all things considered. There were a few firms that made a similarly worded request (that were shared with me) and I suggested asking the affiliate manager. The AM confirmed it was a legit request. I did laugh when told of that.

Anyway, best practice is ask the person at the company you work with who is making the request (i.e. - your affiliate manager) before doing anything.

If you get from a seriös Affiliate Partner this mail is no problem to inssure this, but not from "williamhill" a company who steal money from partners!!

My word! If this is all straight (and it appears it is) there might be an awful lot of 'please can you remove my link' mails bouncing around in coming weeks. Pretty much every operator?! Unless some of them have clearly done some dark stuff and have been nailed for it.

What surprises me is that link disavowers seem to go all out and try to remove everything, even the links that are probably helping them.

I find this quite untrue. Just because someone filled a disavow for your site, it doesn't mean Google will take it as a clear cut sign you have done something wrong and you will be punished. Once again a silly scare tactics attempt.

If this will cause you to lose money (you get a lot of registrations etc) I'd ignore the request. If this is gonna cost you a lot of time (meaning you do not use a link cloaker that will allow you to change all links from a single place) I'd ignore the request.

If you however you are not making anything or heavily promoting them, I'd remove all links as requested and never promote them again unless compensated for the caused inconvenience.

Of course they have done shady stuff, I doubt Google sends false positives around. With this logic, I hope they have sent letters to Facebook and Twitter cause tons of affiliate links sit there too. I don't want Twitter and Facebook to get removed from Google's serps /end of sarcasm.

We get the most number of requests from people offering guests articles or wanting to pay to publish articles with WilliamHill linked.

I don't like this kind of companies (links removal services).
They make money removing links from spammy websites.

Few months ago I received a mail from one of them (NOT Linkresearchtools).
They sent me a semi-detailed traffic report and a spammy backlinks lists (dangerous, almost with "viaxxxgra" or "caxxis" or "pRon" anchor text) pointing to our site. Never seen before this mail those links, neither in GWT.

My question was: "who put those links on such crappy websites?"

This is ridiculous. If true, they chase affiliates with really poor threat, that disawoving their links will hurt them (which is not a fact but speculation).
I have a side project about internet security, we emailed Willhill (few times I think), because we have found real problems with the "hidden image links" as I quote the link above and no one responded.

I must admit that I really like Google strict policies. Who does not care is hit, who cares is the winner. Yes it is not democracy, but fortunately enough Google is not an insane totalitarian.

I very much doubt that is a genuine email, for starters William Hill still have all their rankings so they don't seem to have a penalty

note - I only did a couple of quick searches so my statement might not be true

Hi guys,

I have checked with our SEO department, turns out they did send that email.

Removing (or disavowing) bad links is vital for avoiding penalties in Google as well as for recovering the rankings of sites that received a penalty, and we were instructed by google to remove this specific link, from this specific website.
However, we asked to remove only direct links and not tracking links so it doesn't affect affiliates and targets mainly links from sites of poor quality such as old directories.

In this specific case the site quality was good, so if the affiliate chooses to keep the link it's fine too. It still might be better to replace it with a tracking link so you get credited for players that arrive via this link.

Affiliates wouldn't link to the program direct without an affiliate tracking link to get commission. Affiliates are not that generous. It seems obvious there is a link building team in place that built many links to William Hill and getting these removed is going to be a long and difficult process unless you simply disavow it as an option.
