Question How long have you owned your mobile phone?

Today is my birthday, and a gift I received was a new mobile phone as I mentioned in the Happy Birthday, Michael Corfman :) thread started by Cash Bonus.

That gift is the inspiration for this week's poll:

How long have you owned your current mobile phone?

Besides voting in the poll, be sure to share what phone you currently have. Whether your old one was lost or stolen or broken or you just wanted a new one, and whether you plan to buy a new one anytime soon.

If I'd answered that question this morning, I would have said I bought my current phone six years ago, and that even with the evolution in technology since that time, I didn't feel like it needed urgent replacement. The phone before that was replaced because it stopped working reliably, and the one before that because it was stolen off of me one evening in London when I was there for ICE.

My phone this morning was a Galaxy Note 8 I had been using since 2018. Now I have a Galaxy S24 Ultra. So, I've jumped ahead six generations. The technology does keep getting better. 5G versus 4G, a 5.0 instead of 3.3 mAH battery, 3.4 instead of 2.3 GHz, 12 instead of 6GB RAM, 256 instead of 64GB memory. Moore's law is a wonderful thing.

    How about yours?

I've only got one mobile phone, which is the iPhone XS Max. I bought it in 2018 and it's still going alright. The battery life has decreased significantly and it keeps freezing up. I'm hoping to replace it by year's end.

I've had my current iphone 14 for just over a year now, I generally tend to take 3-year contracts on them now and upgrade to the latest iphone model at (or close to) the end of the contract period.

My first iphone was an iphone 3 and although I've skipped a few models along the way I've not had a different brand of phone since.

I was a big Blackberry fan but jumped over to iPhones when the 5 was released and I have only used iPhones since. Using a 12 now and have been for nearly 4 years. I'm not convinced there is enough reason to upgrade as the newer models don't really do much more that I need. I will need to at some point because the battery obsolesce they build in will force me, I think my battery is below 50% of what it was to start with now.

I had a 12 before the 14 and you're right, very little difference I can notice for day to day use. Better camera maybe all I could name.

My current phone is about four to five years old. The previous one literally fell apart, so I went to the store to buy a replacement, and here we are a few years later.

Even though it's old and a bit worn out, I don't feel the urgency to replace it. If it doesn't fall apart like the previous one, I'd like to upgrade to an iPhone 12 or newer.

On average my mobile phones are around 2-3 years until I replace and upgrade.

I keep on going until they are truly beyond saving, currently have a portable battery with me for emergency extra charge which should probably tell me its time to change. But i think going strong 5 years with this one.

When I first bought a mobile phone, I used Android, but now I use an iPhone. I have been using iPho NE for more than 10 years and currently has two. I am very satisfied.

I've been using my current phone for over 2 years now. The previous one had served me for 8 years, had to replace it cause it became incompatible with the latest versions of the apps I use daily.

I usually have a phone for 3 years. For some reason, my phones tend to only last 3 years. I actually just bought a new phone.
