    Default Namecheap terminating Russian accounts

Many users on Reddit are reporting they have received termination notices from Namecheap giving customers 1 week to change domain registrar and hosting. This seems to be sent to Russian customers but no mention of this on Namecheap website or social channels. Is starting to be reported in news.

A few Reddit threads about these announcements here and here.

Namecheap have estimate 2.9% of the market share for where domains are registered.

    Thanks for that report.

This is fairly hot news for many people so gonna move it to the Industry Buzz section, with a redirect in place.

Will make it a sticky for now also.

    Fairly short notice.

If anyone finds that other registrars make similar notices, let us know so more folks can be informed.

That’s very unfair and biased towards their customers and it will obviously be a reasonable loss to their company. Absolute BS.

Here are a few other sources to confirm the above.

    https://reclaimthenet.org/domain-and...sian-citizens/
This article states the policy has been updated to give people until March 22nd to move sites/names. I would think taking care of this as fast as possible is the best for those that are affected by this directly.

Articles are popping up everywhere, so most major news outlets will likely cover this if they haven't yet.

    Good approach.

It's unfortunate that Russian business will be affected - but Russian people need to speak loudly with one voice to Putin and other autocrats that waging war in their name is unacceptable.

I agree. It's sad to see that ordinary people are facing consequences and it's obviously very upsetting to see how Ukrainian people suffer because of some mad dogs. I also really feel for Russian people which are now facing with even more problems including all these restrictions, future poverty and stigma even though they never wanted this war.

It is unfortunate that the Russian people need to suffer for leaderships decisions.

Have been seeing some reports that some in Ukraine are now calling for ALL .ru and a few other top level domains to be disabled or deleted from the top level dns servers. What has been suggested so far that I have seen is “.ru”, “.рф”, “.su”

    https://www.theregister.com/2022/03/...icann_domains/

That is extremely far reaching and so far ICANN has stated they will not do it and wish to remain clear and wants to remain out of it.

This madness against common Russian folks reminds me the Fight Club scene, where people use any possible excuses for not just to fight. This is actually even better. How the West is pretending they are doing something, while they just do nothing as usually.

The big war with Russia is inevitable (now or later). Before the rest of Russia will join forces with NATO against China and that will be the third world war.

All people who think this will cause some changes in Russia and pressure against government is just an idiot. Russian (and Ukrainian) people are not western consumerists. They did not revolt en masse even during famine. The fact that they must use fake contact at domain registrar will not cause a murder of Putin.
If you talk to God, you are praying; If God talks to you, you have schizophrenia.

As much as I disagree with the fact that Russian innocents people are effected by the results of Russia leadership criminal war, I feel much more sorry for the children and helpless people in Ukraine who are now suffering badly from the heavy and indiscriminate bombing, who lost their homes and are now refugees, homeless in other countries! Not to mention those who died or were injured so far.
So if these sanctions will do even the most minor thing to make the people of Russia start pushing Putin the criminal to stop what he is doing there, be it!

This is actually the goal of the West - they wait for the Russian people to rebel against their government.

It is interesting that Russia did not take a step back against all this pressure.

Namecheap actually have a lot of their workforce in Ukraine (3 offices if I'm not mistaken) and most of their customer support. So they have been directly impacted by this war, and their actions make sense.

    That was my initial reaction.

One should not judge a group by an individual, but someone has to push people to speaking out and, well, standing up for themselves actually.

Yup I had face same issue while even I was not from Russia. I think onlydomains is so far better than namecheap. I have registered my domain firstly with namecheap. But after that I have swithed to other mentioned domain name provider.

Imagine if Namecheap had stood up for the "war crimes and human rights violations" perpetrated on the people of Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, etc and shut down US customers.

You fools are playing with fire supporting politics injections into normal business affairs.
