Default Online gambling on the rise in Australia

New research from the Australian National University reveals a growing number of Australians are engaging in online gambling and exhibiting risky behaviors. The study found that gambling rates, which spiked post-pandemic, have remained elevated.

According to Dr. Aino Suomi, director of the gambling research center, participation in gambling activities, including lotteries, has plateaued at approximately 60% of the adult population, a significant increase from the 50% participation rate observed during the Covid-19 shutdowns.

    From the press release:

Lead author Dr Aino Suomi said the study provides an important snapshot of Australian gambling habits.

“While the number of Australians who gamble is similar to 12 months ago ?60.3 per cent compared to 61.3 per cent ?the number of individuals gambling at risky levels increased from 11.6 per cent to 13.6 per cent,?she said.

“This means a larger proportion of individuals who gamble are experiencing harm.?br />
“Our data also suggests a move away from venue-based gambling to activities that are readily available online, such as sports betting.?
The most popular gambling activity in 2024 was buying lottery tickets ?46.8 per cent of Australia’s adult population ?followed by buying raffle or scratch tickets, gambling on poker machines and race betting.

Australian men, older age groups and those with lower levels of education had higher rates of gambling participation than younger age groups.

“We saw a substantial decline in gambling participation rates in the midst of the pandemic, from 65.6 per cent in 2019 to 53.5 per cent in 2021, in part likely due to a lack of access to gambling venues,?Dr Suomi said.

This would be great news for affiliates around the world, especially Australian affiliates, unless of course you take into account the reality of the situatuion.

Part 1 is that the market is so concentrated now with only big names operating the majority of the online betting sites.

Note - It is only legal for Australian residents to market online sports betting and racing markets. It is illegal to promote online casinos for Australian residents - side note - the government makes a literal fuckton from all of the physical slot machines, or "pokies" as they are colloquially known here, which the government gets a very healthy share of taxes from. However they want to introduce ways to "limit the harm" caused by these machines. This has been before parliament for as long as I remember. I don't think they really want anything to change because they make so much money from the poker machines, but back on topic though.

This news may be hugely beneficial for those who reside outside of Australia and promote online casinos to Aussies. There's always been big money there - we are one of the biggest betting markets in the world.

Part 2 - Getting paid without getting screwed over.

Since the major legal online racing/sportsbooks are owned by a few huge operators who, when they merged, shut down half or more of their branded websites, and if you had referred clients to more than 1 of their websites, then bad luck to you. You lost all your clients.

It doesn't matter if you've been working with these companies for a decade and are making them hundreds of thousands a month or more profit, they will change their terms and conditions retroactively, and stop paying you completely because your life has fallen apart around you.

Be wary of anything Matt Tripp has been involved in. More than once his companies went out and recruited me with good offers, then once you promote them heavily and get a few whales, they renege on the original terms and conditions agreed to and **** you over and not pay you at all. I wasn't able to fulfil their constantly changing minimum new customer rules, as with the rest of the companies who realised they could screw over the not so big affiliates and keep the whales, the millions of dollars a year, and **** the poor people who were going through the worst periods in their lives.

The only affiliate program in Australia I'd recommend would be Bet365.

But hey, promote the hell out of online pokies in Australia, you'll do well.
