I think he means SEO optimized articles.
Content is crucial but nowadays i believe the affiliate industry is moving more and more towards engagement based not purely content!
I think Long Tail keywords are the best approach for startup websites to rank higher than the competition.
Depends on what your promoting.
If it's for quick leads from bonus offers, articles most likely won't yield much value.
But if you're giving gaming advice or instructions for confused first timers, keyword rich articles could work.
It's all about about the user interaction these days. The more lively your site is with organic users, time on site, shares and back-links the more Google sees the potential.
I am a startup who is trying to wrap around my head on how to best gain organic traffic so what is Long Tail keywords?
Ok, an example would be
"betting"
A keyword a little more difficult to rank high for, but a long tail that might be:
"matched betting in sweden"
Someone searching for betting could actually be searching for betting in Asia, or maybe Las Vegas, but logic says that even though it's a much lower total number of searches, someone searching for matched betting in sweden has a better chance of converting landing on a page designed for the long tail.
Pretty generalized example but might help understand the difference.

Read this book. one of the best books I ever read:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Long_Tail_(book)
the thing about the long tail is that ranking for hundreds of 5+ keyword search combinations can bring in more traffic than a 'root' keyword like 'betting'.
the best thing however, is that long tail traffic converts better, as it is more specific, and more geared towards user intent than the short tail keyword
eg iphone vs iphone case in white <- this one will drive sales and be easier to rank for, the generic keyword probably won't, so much.
here's a great article of chris anderson talking about the long tail => https://www.wired.com/2004/10/tail/
READ THAT BOOK!
