Sports Interaction betting analyst Frank Doyle previews the action at Roland Garros as the French Open Tennis heats up to an epic conclusion this weekend!

Roger Federer is tennis?lion in winter. Federer won sixteen grand slams in his prime. He won or came second in nineteen straight tournaments. Five US Opens in a row, five Wimbledon in a row. He dominated his sport just as Sampras, McEnroe and Borg dominated it before him.

The red clay of Roland Garros has been the only surface upon which he’s struggled ?struggled in the R-Fed sense, of course, in that he’s only won one French Open. But the talent that once burned so brightly is now showing signs of age - Federer has only won one Grand Slam event out of the last seven, and is sliding slowly down the hill, as all great players must inevitably do.

Which is what makes Federer’s match against Novak Djokovic in the French Open semi-final so very interesting. If Djokovic beats Federer ?and we make him a -370 favorite to do so at Sports Interaction ?Djokovic will equal John McEnroe’s record for most consecutive wins at the start of a season.

Only thing is, Federer is having one of his best ever French Opens. He hasn’t dropped a set at Roland Garros this year and is playing like a man without a care in the world. Roger Maris?hair fell out as he closed on Babe Ruth’s home run record ?how must Djokovic be feeling now? Not least as Federer is the last man to actually beat Djokovic in a game of tennis. Right now, the +245 on the Fed Express against Djokovic looks a very canny bet indeed.

In the women’s competition, the semi-finals are set. Defending Champion Francesca Shiavone is a -175 favorite against local heroine Marion Bartoli. The fifth seed and defending Champion wasn’t a popular bet before the tournament started, but the early fall of the top seeds opened the way for her.

The fall of the top seeds was of most benefit to Maria Sharapova, whose comeback to tennis?top tier continues apace in Paris. Injury and inconsistency plagued Sharapova in the past two years, but her win in Rome in April and her march to the semi-finals at Roland Garros confirms Sharapova’s return as a force to be reckoned with.

Sharapova will face China’s Li Na in the semi-final. Na was runner-up at the Australian Open but Sharapova will start as favorite to win the semi and the final itself on Saturday. If she succeeds, Sharapova will complete a career Grand Slam, seven years after she first burst onto the scene to win Wimbledon.
