Sports Interaction betting analyst Frank Doyle makes his picks for the US Open!
The Blue course at Congressional is 7,547 yards long. The par four eleventh is 494 yards long, which is a considerable challenge for a professional. An amateur could be trying to get from tee to green in days. The USGA has always prided itself on the US Open being tough to win and that looks like being no different this year.
Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Phil Mickelson are the ante-post favorites. The Englishmen are the World Numbers 1 and 2, and both are overdue a major title ?heavily so, Westwood’s case. That being said, Donald is probably the better bet. His is the better formline for the year, and there’s a sneaking suspicion that Westwood’s window may already have closed.
Mickelson’s price is based chiefly on sentiment. After coming second at the US Open so often, and after all he’s been through, nobody would begrudge Mickelson a US Open on his 21st attempt. But Mickelson is struggling with an arthritic condition, and Congressional is a punishingly long course, as we’ve noted already.
The two best value golfers on the board are Bubba Watson and Angel Cabrera. Watson has the distance to handle Congressional, being second on the PGA tour this year in driving distance. Cabrera is the most under-estimated golfer in the world ?he’s won two majors, and he is always a big ante post price. Cabrera was seventh at Augusta this year, and seems to up his game for the majors. At 80/1 with Sports Interaction, the Argentinean is a great each-way bet.
It would be great for the game if this were to be a US Open where the younger generation claimed the game and proved that it can carry on in the post-Tiger era. Rickie Fowler has the talent but it’s yet to be seen if he has the application and the mental fortitude to win a tour event, to say nothing of as punishing a contest as the US Open.
And because mental fortitude is so important a factor in golf, how about Rory McIlroy? The Masters was his to lose on the final day and he lost it in spectacular fashion, his game falling apart before our eyes. But what’s McIlroy done since that collapse?
Third in the Malaysian Open, missed the cut at the Wells Fargo, tied 24th in the BMW PGA at Wentworth at fifth at the Memorial. McIlroy is showing no scars from Augusta at all. One will get you eighteen he’ll complete that redemptive journey at Congressional, and what a story that would be.
