    Default Wordpress 6.4 Officially released

So far have not seen issues but be careful if you are running older versions of php.

Also seems like some iterations of php 8 are seeing issues.

    Mysql support in 6.4

PHP 7 dropped the use of mysql extension for security and performance improvements. Since WordPress 6.4 now requires PHP 7 and above, mysql support will be dropped. Instead, 6.4 will use a more secure mysqli.

As always, you should grab a fresh backup of the site folder and the database in case anything goes wrong.

Old outdated plugins and themes may have many bugs.

I've updated all my sites without any problems.

Crossed my fingers and did it as well, no issues. Usually it's something small and annoying with a template of mine. The last major update it was the Guttenberg editor's width would not have a margin, making me have to press Enter 20-30 times to create more paragraphs. Debugs wouldn't catch it, no errors on the console.

Before that 6.2, I had custom fields that would not pass values upon creating the post, but would save them on saving the post. Once again no errors or anything to go for. Host couldn't figure it out, ACF support couldn't, ChatGPT did after 20 mins of reason eliminations.

I have like 3 plugins, but my issues always come from either custom fields, or their Guttenberg editor.

I updated my site and had no issues.
I think an update is necessary for security reasons as well.

There is yet another new update rolling out for wordpress 6.4.1

I did see a few weird things with cache on certain special queries but no major issues. Most of the reports scattered around I have seen were issues with "some responsive themes" or problems with "some custom queries".

One report stated he had found it caused problems with one specific page builder, goes on and on about the issue but refused to state what page builder. (Translated to: I found this problem I want to tell you all about but absolutely will not tell you the specifics or how to avoid the issue)

I saw quite a few folks have trouble updating themes after going to 6.4 but not sure if that was isolated to a handful of themes or not.

The main issue I had seen that might have been at the root of those that did see some bugs were the cURL/Requests bug. The 6.4.1 should fix that if anyone had issues.

The 6.4.1 is listed officially as a maintenance release. Based on the article at wptavern, it does appear to be a really important or necessary update.

Edited to add/ as always get a folder backup and database backup before doing the update

Thanks for the explanation, Rick. I will do it today.

Every update is a headache for me, I usually wait to see if others have problems or ask someone on the team to take care of it. The tech part is definitely not my thing.

Several sites have been updated, but there are no problems. I specifically update 2-3 sites to check their functionality.
But I also want to note that minor errors appeared when working with certain plugins, for example Rank Math SEO and ThirstyAffiliates. But they were quickly fixed.

    And yet another release.
6.4.2 has a security fix and a few minor bug fixes that may have affected folks depending on the plugins they use.

6.4.3 is out but only contained minor bug fixes.

I have noticed some minor bugs in the 6.4.x releases. (don't think it was seen in th 6.3.x)

The bug is rather minor and a friend of mine figured out the work around.

It has to do with custom fields when using queries and displaying items based on those queries. Can only reproduce the bug so far when using page previews.

In one case when a page is previewed, and an image in shown on the page, based on data from a custom field, often the image will not show in the preview of a draft before publishing.

Normally your preview url (must be logged in to dashboard) will look something like this.
    domain.com/?page_id=4187&preview=true

Oddly on some sites this will not allow the image to be shown on the page from a custom short code, based upon criteria of the page, that also has certain data in custom fields on that page from a custom widget. (only in a preview window) And in these cases the code and image url etc, everything is in the source code of the page but it will not display. (I know I didn't believe it either, kept thinking it was cache, but it's not)

The work around in this particular case is to remove the &preview=true.

Once the page is published the bug goes away.

If anyone ever sees something dd like this, and it seems it is only during preview, give it a try, it might fix the display issue.

Have seen a small handful of posts here and there where a few folks have talked about minor nuances with custom field queries, so something minor in the core has changed in recent months that affects this.

Should I update WordPress to the latest version? It would be wise to wait a few months and see if there are no issues before updating, much like how we approach Windows updates.

    I would say yes.

Be 100% sure you have a backup of the database, as well as a copy of the web folder. If anything goes wrong, you can get back to where you were before the update fairly quickly if needed.

The initial concerns of the upgrades to this specific release that were initially spoke about have mostly been minor issues. The minor bug about not always being able to see content or images while a page or post is in draft has a simple workaround if you happen to see it.

Using caution and insuring backups is always a good policy, before all upgrades.

Yea read a few things last night but haven't seen anything major yet.

Same warnings and practices should be followed to make backups of the site folder and database in case anything goes wrong.

Prerequisites raise the mysql database version slightly but if I recall the minimum is now 5.5 which should not be an issue for most folks. Those with custom themes and plugins will want to test functions immediately in case changes are needed.
